Reading the Water Meter

Monitoring your water meter regularly can help track usage and detect any potential leaks early, helping you avoid unexpected increases in your water bill. Water meters are typically located in a green plastic or concrete box in the ground at the front of your property.

For further assistance, please contact the CCSD at 805-927-6223. Refer to the guide below for instructions on how to read your water meter.

Water Meter Guide

  1. Billing Numbers: The first four digits on the left side of your water meter are designated for billing purposes. To determine the number of water units used during the current billing period, subtract the ending amount from the previous billing period. Note that one unit of water is equivalent to 100 cubic feet or 748 gallons.
  2. Sweep Hand on Meter Face: Each complete revolution of the sweep hand represents one cubic foot of water, which is equal to 7.48 gallons.
  3. Blue Snowflake/Leak Detector: The blue snowflake symbol on the meter rotates whenever water is flowing through it. If all water fixtures are turned off and the snowflake is still moving, this indicates the presence of a leak.
